How to Design an Industrial-style Coffee Shop

In Coffee Shop Design, Interior Design

With social progress and continuous economic development, the coffee economy and coffee consumption are becoming increasingly popular. In our traditional consumer mindset, coffee is primarily a way to stay alert, especially during work and study. A cup of coffee can significantly alleviate drowsiness, making us more efficient. However, with changing lifestyles and economic development, people are increasingly inclined to enjoy coffee as afternoon tea or a daily beverage. Consumers are beginning to appreciate the aroma of coffee and the experience offered by its packaging design. As a result, more and more coffee shops are opening to adapt to this growing coffee economy trend.

However, a comfortable and quiet coffee shop can keep people entertained for an entire afternoon. Industrial-style coffee shops are becoming increasingly popular because they possess a unique retro charm and break away from the traditional style of coffee shops. Industrial-style coffee shops offer a different experience. To design a popular industrial-style coffee shop, we need to consider the following aspects.

Material Selection

We all know that the first thing we notice when entering a coffee store is its materials. The overall appearance is crucial. The style of a coffee shop largely depends on the choice of materials. This is especially true for an industrial-style coffee shop. When choosing materials, opt for those with a raw, authentic feel. Ideally, the surface should have texture to highlight the natural, unpretentious character.

For the flooring, gray terrazzo is a good choice. Its distinct surface particles provide excellent texture. As a flooring material, it’s wear-resistant and stain-resistant. We can then add other metallic accents, such as silver or matte gold stainless steel, to further enhance the industrial atmosphere.

The choice of coffee bar counter is even more important. We don’t recommend glossy painted materials for the bar counter. Stainless steel is the preferred choice. To create an industrial style, we need to emphasize metallic and glossy textures. The cool metallic colors paired with black and gray tones create a unified overall style. The tables and chairs also incorporate some metallic elements. However, it’s important to note that when choosing tables, we can opt for distressed solid wood tables, preserving the natural texture of the surface. This material combination prevents the space from feeling too cold, adding more variety and making the overall shop design more complete.

The Use of Lighting

We know that lighting can create a strong atmosphere. Not only is the choice of materials important, but the interplay between light and materials is crucial. A suitable combination is essential to creating an industrial-style ambiance.

Industrial coffee shops emphasize layered lighting. We typically use white recessed lights or track lighting on the ceiling. This layout makes the entire space brighter and visually more spacious and clear. As mentioned earlier, ample light illuminates the textures of the walls and coffee preparation area.

The use of localized lighting also requires careful consideration. We often use warm light to supplement specific areas, especially the bar area. Warm light is installed on the coffee preparation bar and in the customer lounge area. Warm, even lighting enhances the physiological and psychological experience of enjoying coffee.

Creating a Unique Interior Space

Opening an attractive industrial-style coffee shop requires more than just focusing on the industrial aesthetic; it’s about crafting a unique design.

As seen in the image, the spatial layout is very clear. On the left, we see a wooden staircase. The open design creates a sense of spatial interplay. The wooden staircase paired with gray metal handrails adds depth and texture to the entire space. On the right is the coffee counter. The counter uses a very unique material, a design that immediately draws you in. The counter uses a dark gray, vertically textured material, giving it a sophisticated look and a strong industrial feel. Professional coffee machines, grinders, and other equipment are displayed on the counter.

The L-shaped counter not only optimizes the space but also facilitates efficient work for the coffee operator. The glass partition next to the bar preparation area allows ample natural light to flood in. This light, combined with the linear interior lighting, creates a sense of depth and dimension in the otherwise bright space. The overall atmosphere of the shop is both professional and incredibly comfortable. The design showcases the coffee shop’s commitment to the fusion of light and aesthetics in its spatial design.
