Design style

This vintage wall cabinet measures approximately 1.7 m x 0.7 m x 2.7 m. From its overall shape to the detailed decorations, it deeply replicates the classical architectural aesthetics. The towering columns and the distinctively layered cornices evoke the design of niches in European classical temples or noble residences. It infuses a sense of solemnity and elegance into the home space. Although the wall cabinet is centered around a retro theme, its functional design also takes practicality into account. The open niches meet the display needs and can be paired with spotlights to highlight the displayed items. Whether placed in the living room for decorative display or used in religious spaces to hold objects, its design can adapt to various scenarios.

The design ensures the beauty and also the functionality of the furniture. The opening in the middle can display artworks, religious objects, or precious collections. It also enhances the classical sense of order through symmetrical design. The overall design is suitable for retro, neoclassical, or other style home environments, infusing the space with a sense of historical weight.

Material selection

The main body is made of plywood and wood veneer. The natural texture and warm feel of wood align with the retro style’s pursuit of “nature and simplicity.” The veneer has an attractive texture and is treated to be anti-corrosive and moisture-proof. All the carved decorations are made of solid wood. The surface is coated with clear varnish to retain the original wood grain. At the same time, a unified color tone is used to present the mottled appearance of time, making the retro charm more intense. The varnish forms a protective film, enhancing wear resistance and durability, and ensuring long-term aesthetic appeal.

Process details

The relief carvings on the columns, eaves, and the bottom of the niches are the highlights of the craftsmanship. The carved patterns include classical elements such as scrollwork and geometric designs. Through meticulous relief techniques, the artisans have made the patterns distinct in layers and smooth in lines. From the design draft to the final carving, it goes through multiple processes, including drawing, mold-making, carving, and polishing, testing the artisans’ control over lines and proportions. Every pattern carries the warmth of handcrafting and is the sole embodiment of the retro style.

The connection between the columns and the eaves is achieved through mortise and tenon joints. It ensures structural stability while adhering to the logic of classical craftsmanship. Each step, from wood drying and sanding to painting and aging, affects the final texture. Drying treatment removes moisture from the wood to prevent deformation. Multiple sandings make the surface smooth and fine. The wood varnish with a retro color tone is selected for painting, and the retro style is transformed into a tangible texture through color rubbing and aging techniques.
